Tell us about yourself, the district you serve, and your history as a legislator.
I am a Republican State Senator representing Virginia’s 12th District, which includes Colonial Heights and part of Chesterfield County. I have been involved in public service for many years, starting on the Richmond School Board before being elected to the Virginia State Senate in 2015. My focus has been on education reform, fiscal responsibility, and protecting individual rights.
What called you to public service?
My journey into public service was driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in my community. Growing up, I was heavily involved in Scouting, where I learned the value of community service and leadership. This early experience, combined with a passion for improving education and accountability in our public sc
hools, inspired me to run for the Richmond School Board and later for the State Senate.
On what committees do you serve?
I currently serve on the Local Government Committee, the Privileges and Elections Committee, and the Transportation Committee. These roles allow me to contribute to legislation that impacts a wide range of issues affecting Virginians.
What do you consider to be your biggest legislative accomplishment?
I helped to create a low-cost catastrophic healthcare plan in Virginia, and increased the penalty for assaulting a nurse from a misdemeanor to a felony.
What are the most pressing issues facing Virginia’s medical professionals right now? Any legislation of note that you would like to highlight on this front?
Virginia’s medical professionals are facing several pressing issues, including workforce shortages and the need for better mental health resources. I am actively looking into legislation to improve funding for healthcare services, support telehealth initiatives, and enhance the working conditions for all healthcare providers, including nurse anesthetists.
What advice do you have for VANA members looking to get involved in the General Assembly? What are the most effective ways to communicate with our legislators?
My advice to VANA members is to stay informed and actively engaged with legislators. Attend public hearings, participate in advocacy days, and make your voices heard through emails and calls. Building personal relationships with your representatives and sharing your professional experiences can significantly impact legislative decisions. Effective communication involves being clear, concise, and persistent.
What can Virginia CRNAs do to support other health profession issues that are important to you?
Virginia CRNAs can support other health profession issues by collaborating with other healthcare professionals to advocate for comprehensive healthcare reforms. This includes supporting initiatives that improve access to care, promote patient safety, and address public health challenges. By working together and presenting a united front, CRNAs can help drive positive changes in the healthcare system to benefit all Virginians.
