A study from Negrusa and colleagues, published in Nursing Economic$ in 2021 describing the state of the anesthesia provider labor market, identifies a 10.7% excess demand for anesthesia services. This present shortage of anesthesia providers is projected to decline to 3.6% by 2027 due to higher rates of new entrants to the anesthesia profession. Additional reductions in excess demand for anesthesia can be addressed through shifting delivery models toward more independent providers.
