CRNAs are Leading the Future of Outpatient Surgery

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) are operating in a fast-changing healthcare environment. With anesthesia provider shortages growing and reimbursement challenges increasing, many centers are rethinking how care is delivered. As patient demand shows no signs of slowing down, the solution is clear: adopting Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA)-only models.

CRNAs already deliver more than 50 million anesthetics each year, and in many rural and underserved communities, they are the only anesthesia providers making surgical care possible. Their ability to practice independently, in line with their education and training, positions them as essential leaders in the future of outpatient surgery. In fact, according to Becker’s ASC, more than 80% of anesthesia providers in rural counties are CRNAs, making them critical in expanding access where it’s needed most.

Becker’s ASC reports that facilities transitioning to CRNA-only models are seeing both clinical and financial benefits. These centers are streamlining care, improving scheduling flexibility, and ensuring patients continue to receive safe, timely healthcare even as physician shortages increase. Surgeons and ASC administrators are finding that CRNAs bring a unique combination of clinical expertise, adaptability, and patient-centered care that strengthens the entire surgical team.

The physician anesthesia shortage is expected to peak in the next three to five years, according to Becker’s. By 2026, the U.S. is projected to face a shortage of 6,300 anesthesiologists. Currently, there are more than 7,700 patients per anesthesiologist, with more retiring each year. Many anticipate CRNAs will take on even greater leadership roles in ASC settings as those margins continue to narrow.

Recognizing the benefits of CRNA-only ASCs is a massive win for the industry. It provides quality, safe healthcare for patients, lowers healthcare costs, and recognizes the value that CRNAs bring to patient care during a time when the industry has a critical need.

The healthcare system is in transition, and ASCs that embrace CRNAs are showing what the future can look like: accessible and affordable with high-quality surgical care in every community. CRNAs aren’t just filling the gaps; they’re shaping the path forward.
