VANA By the Numbers – March 2024

As the 2024 session of the General Assembly concludes, we wanted to thank everyone who helped us during the past several months. Just look at the impact we all had:

  • 1,834 letters were sent to legislators using the VANA Action Center during the 2024 General Assembly session. VANA members sent 1,415 letters to their Delegates and Senators on HB 1322 and SB 33. Friends and family of VANA members sent another 419 letters on the legislation as well. These efforts helped us pass HB 1322 in the House of Delegates, marking the first-time legislation to remove supervision of CRNAs passed a legislative body in Virginia!
  • Speaking of HB 1322, legislation that was sponsored by Del. Mark Sickles, 71 members of the House of Delegates stood with VANA in supporting passage of this critical legislation. The 71 Delegates who supported ending supervision for Virginia CRNAs include: Anthony, Arnold, Askew, Batten, Bennett-Parker, Bloxom, Bulova, Callsen, Campbell, Cherry, Clark, Cohen, Cole, Convirs-Fowler, Cordoza, Cousins, Coyner, Delaney, Earley, Ennis, Feggans, Fowler, Freitas, Gardner, Garrett, Glass, Hayes, Helmer, Henson, Herring, Jones, Keys-Gamarra, Kilgore, Laufer, Leftwich, LeVere Bolling, Lopez, Lovejoy, Maldonado, Martinez, McClure, McNamara, McQuinn, Morefield, Mundon King, O’Quinn, Phillips, Rasoul, Reaser, Reid, Runion, Scott, P.A., Seibold, Sewell, Shin, Sickles, Simon, Simonds, Srinivasan, Sullivan, Taylor, Thomas, Torian, Tran, Watts, Webert, Willett, Williams, Wilt, Wright, and Zehr.
  • On the Senate side, we’d like to thank the six Senators who stood with VANA in opposing SB 33, which would have expanded the definition of supervision. Fortunately, this legislation was continued over to the 2025 session, where it could be considered again. The six Senators who stood with VANA are: Boysko, Durant, Jordan, Mulchi, Sturtevant, and Suetterlein.
  • We had two universities that helped support our legislative efforts this year, including Mary Baldwin University and Old Dominion University. Thank you both!
  • We also enjoyed support from nine companies, including: Massanutten Dental Team and Oral Surgery PLC, Goodwin & Snyder, Southampton Anesthesiology Associates, Hampton Roads Gastroenterology, Virginia Family Dentistry, Virginia Endoscopy Group, MDC, and Alouf Aesthetics.
  • We’d like to also thank the individuals who supported our legislative agenda by taking direct action, including: Shwta Soni, DDS; Cary L. Gentry, MD FACS, FASCRS; Adrieanne Golly, DDS, MD; M. Scott Gore, DDS; Michael Helvey, DO; Manuel Orozco, DMD, MSD; CAPT(ret) Stephen “Jawdoc” Paulette, DC, USN; Stephen Alouf, DDS; Cheryl Miller; Fred Duckworth, MD; Paul Yeaton, MD; Nicole Yeshtokin, DO, MPH; Robin L. Jones, MD, FACG; Jean Snyder, CRNA; and Daniel Noffsinger, FACOG. Thank you all for your support!

Thank you to everyone for your support during our legislative efforts this winter. While we were able to pass our legislation out of the House, we were not able to stop the opposition building momentum out of the Senate. The result was that we had a stalemate with an agreement to work throughout the year to see what consensus can be developed between all sides.

At the end of the day, we were able to have our historic legislation HB 1322 advance out of the House due to the support of so many different individuals and organizations. We are grateful for your help!
